No business can achieve success without the space to do it in. Commercial interior designers provide the means for that success by designing spaces with the functional and aesthetic considerations essential to every business.

The mall. The bank. The office complex. A commercial interior is a space that requires something different than a residence. A great commercial interior designer knows that the sale of a product is the goal of a successful commercial space.

Designing for Success

Choosing a commercial space is one of the first steps a business takes in its lifetime. It must be smart, efficient, and must meet the style of the company and the product it provides.

A commercial interior designer must understand the vision of the client. The space must be infused with that vision; it must be the physical realization of the philosophy of the business. The designer will take the client’s key concepts, develop working drawings and models, agree on a final plan with the client, and then create the space.

What to Know

The knowledge base of the commercial interior designer is extensive, requiring a background in nonresidential design and architecture. A degree in commercial interior design is the best way to gain this background and begin a successful career.

Building codes and zoning laws are major considerations. Human and machine interface issues will play into the layout of the space. Designing an office environment comes with special health and safety considerations, including hallway and exit designs. A successful commercial interior design is conscientious of all of these factors and more.

To design a commercial space is to create the physical platform on which a business can succeed. What business will you build this platform for?
