Today’s soaring gas prices have become a very public reminder of our dependency on a natural resource. The automotive industry, however, isn’t the only business taking note of the public’s growing interest in conserving natural resources. Green interior design, the practice of building and furnishing spaces with energy efficient and renewable resources, is one of the fastest growing interior design careers.

Environmentally friendly design is no longer just a practice of tree huggers and granola types. Many of the nation’s leading interior design schools offer courses in green interior design, and other schools bring in guest speakers and host seminars in green design techniques.

While you likely cannot get a degree in green design yet, an interior design degree will give you the foundation you need to get a job with a green interior design firm. Because this is a revolutionary field, much of the learning about green design will be on the job. Green design firms, however, are more likely to offer entry-level jobs to candidates who’ve attended interior design school.

The Benefits of ‘Green’ Design

Time in interior design school focusing on green design can lead to a satisfying career. Here are a few reasons to consider focusing your interior design career on green design:

  • The spaces you create are healthier for people
  • Green designs use less energy and make less pollution
  • Green design is the fastest growing sector of interior design

Green design is a great way to make a significant contribution to preserving the earth and to spend your days doing meaningful work.
