A home interior design education will give you the edge against self-taught amateurs.

The once-closed world of home interior design is slowly opening up to self-educated homeowners. Where once home interior designers held the access to the best interior design ideas and decorating accessories, the proliferation of design magazines such as “Domino” and the opening of major design supply houses to the public have made this world available to many.

Many home owners are now choosing the bypass home interior designers and take a shot at decorating their own homes, at times with great success. While this trend is disturbing to some in the home interior design industry who fear loss of jobs and commissions from the sale of design accessories, other interior designers are changing the way they do business.

Amateur designers can glean interior design ideas from magazines and television shows and shop at famous design supply stores such as the Pacific Design Center, but they often can’t compete against the education and expertise of a home interior designer. By focusing on their interior design skills, design hopefuls can still carve out a successful career with their unique ideas.

Home Interior Design Professionals Cannot Skip Education

An occasional newspaper story will feature a home owner who did a good job decorating her own home and began decorating other homes at friends’ requests. These stories are rare, however, and the best way to guarantee a home interior design career is to get an interior design education.

A design education will teach you the basics of design and prepare you for an entry-level position with a design firm. If you end up going head-to-head with self-taught amateurs, your home interior design ideas and education will set you apart.
