State licensing for interior designers means being a part of a valuable network of architects and interior designers. Oklahoma’s recent joining of the states that license interior design is an important event in the industry. Oklahoma is the latest to join the other 25 US states and 8 Canadian provinces that recognize interior design as a profession. Oklahoma state legislature passed the “State Architectural and Interior Designers Act” last month.
Interior Design of the State
The American Society of Interior Designers praised the event, encouraging the education required to become certified as an interior designer. Now, interior designers must earn their interior design education through an interior design program. Next, they must gain 6 years of experience as an interior designer. At that point they may become an interior designer licensed by the state (a great career qualification).
Another great career boost for interior designers is the membership an interior designer can earn in the Board of Governors of the Licensed Architects, Landscape Architects and Interior Designers, after meeting these qualifications.
Career Moves in Interior Design
Employers (and clients) look for two main things on a resume: education and experience. Your interior design education is the first step. An interior design program is the best way to get the knowledge you need to be qualified. Next, an internship or entry-level interior design job make for good first steps. After a few years of experience in interior design, you can start looking for jobs that meet your specific interests.
Eventually, with 5-7 years experience and a state license, you should be able to pick and choose between multiple interior design projects. And they can be anywhere - even Oklahoma.
