With the real estate market cooling down in many cities, property owners have started to realize that extra attention to interior design can mean the difference between a quick sale and a languishing listing. Calling on interior design school graduates for help, developers and investors can modernize homes to “flip” them quickly.

Real estate agents already rely on home staging professionals to create “move-in ready” spaces for open houses. While not every potential buyer has attended an interior design course, savvy shoppers often know what questions to ask a seller from watching television shows on HGTV and PBS. As designers gain notoriety through television and magazines, some home shoppers even hunt for spaces designed by alumni of notable interior design schools.

Interior Design Schools Offer Solid Career Start

Even if you don’t attend the same interior design school as a notable television celebrity, your training can pay off if you can learn how to follow the trends and whims of the residential real estate market. While you complete interior design courses that teach you how to create modern living spaces in older buildings, consider an apprenticeship or a partnership with a local developer. As “new urbanist” trends convince homeowners to redevelop existing homes, interior design courses on retrofitting old structures for modern lifestyles will provide essential skills for your career.

Some interior design schools have even opened their doors to property developers. By enrolling in some interior design courses, real estate investors can learn how to spot a potential gem on the market, while developing a better rapport with and appreciation for the professional interior designers they hire for quick turnaround projects. Inviting a potential client to join you for an interior design course can be the start of a relationship that you can build throughout your career.
