Looking for your niche in the interior design world? Not everyone designs the interiors of skyscrapers or art museums, nor is building from scratch the only road to an interior design career.
Interior Design: Opportunities in Remodeling
The design firm Decor Design, which works on many residential interior design projects each year, estimates that around 50 percent of its business comes from remodels. For homeowners considering a remodel, then, the best course of action is to hire a designer beforehand. Many designers have enough experience in the industry to guide clients through a successful remodeling process.
As an aspiring interior designer, you may wonder where you can find residential interior design projects. Some jobs may simply involve consulting, where you meet with a client once or twice to help determine the best floorplan. Other projects can last a year or more, with clients needing your constant input as they remodel an entire house. (Variety is another benefit of a residential interior design career).
Designing Right
Many homeowners that remodel make enough to hire an interior designer. Case in point, of the more than 35,000 homeowners who attended Canada’s premiere interior design show, 70 percent had a household income of more than $125,000.
When the average kitchen remodel costs $30,000 (luxury remodels can cost much more), many homeowners would happily spend a little more to have an educated professional making design choices with them. For the dedicated interior designer, residential remodeling offers an opportunity to build your career by rebuilding homes. What could be more satisfying than that?
