As homeowners compete with fluctuating real estate prices, home interior design has grown as a means of tackling the issue. Working in this field means knowing how to match a home’s design with the functional needs of its owners.
Interior Design Growing
Working in home interior design means working in and familiarizing yourself with fluctuations in the real estate market. A flurry of buying and selling over the last five years has caused many homeowners to pay more attention to their home’s design, updating and renovating their homes on a regular basis.
While the do-it-yourself trend remains popular, many homeowners are hiring interior designers to help with more substantial projects. One veteran interior designer shared her thoughts on home interior design online, and highlights the importance of education to career success.
Design Equals Function
Laura Boyle, an interior designer in Daniel Island, South Carolina, emphasized the importance of education in a recent feature for The Daniel Island News. Boyle explained to the publication that the main difference between interior designers and decorators is education.
She declared that an interior design career involves more than simply choosing finishings and color schemes. The interior designer’s primary goal is to ensure that the function of a home’s interior design matches the needs and desires of its owner.
An interior design degree can educate students on designing for function, including coursework in:
- architecture and construction
- spatial planning
- floor planning
An interior design career may also require state licensing in addition to a degree. As Boyle describes, education is essential to a designer’s career.
