Global interior design degree programs allow students from all over the world to earn their education and start careers in design. As one designer from Thailand shows, it isn’t always smooth sailing right after a degree program. Originality and persistence are essential to career success in this industry.

Degree, Design

Interior designer Mechanun Suansilpong got his start slowly. After earning his interior design degree in the mid-nineties, he continued working for the family interior contracting business, Kenkoon Co, in Thailand. His first design project was a request from a major Scandanavian furniture client who asked for some original designs.

His first furniture designs, although aesthetic, did not sell well after they were first introduced. His modern interior design, with steel as its primary material, could have been too modern for customers.

Blossoming Business

Now, some of Mr. Suansilpong’s signature designs include the following transformative pieces, such as a living room sofa bed that changes into a garden bench. His “Taji” collection of outdoor furniture includes benches, chairs, and tables. It has stainless steel frames and legs with natural wood tops, which creates a clean, simple, modern look.

The designer now launches products at furniture fairs and design shows, which helps establish initial market interest and exposure. Kenkoon Co. now averages 30% growth each year.

Building a Career

It’s true that Mr. Suansilpong’s career had a head start through his family’s business, but that wasn’t the only thing that helped him build his success. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that “creativity and perseverance” are what makes designers successful. He was creative with his designs for outdoor furniture that was modern and recognizable. Even though his designs didn’t catch on right away, he persevered.
