As designers and design enthusiasts review the new trends for 2007, those with an interest in an interior design career should take heed; these trends don’t come from just anywhere. The best place to learn interior design and prepare yourself for a career is design school.

Conformity and conventionality isn’t the thing this year in interior design. Creating a blend of disparate interior design elements that work together in one place is the trend, design consultants say.

New Interior Design Trends

Old is new in interior design this year - aged and grainy wood finishes in furniture and floor designs are in. As color goes, interior design trends will focus on intense hues, not boring old neutrals. And “welcoming” is the design trend for comfortable spaces like living rooms. We may see traditional, static living rooms fade from view as we move into 2007.

Material trends will begin surfacing too. Interior design jobs in residential design will focus on including these new materials for more modern clients, materials like Lucite, a clear and durable plastic used for furniture, and even chandeliers. The other end of the design spectrum features spa-like atmospheres created by natural substances and clean lines.

Education Tips for 2007

For young designers or students looking to start their interior design careers, one trend hasn’t changed - education is still the first step. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics underscores this importance, stating that in addition to education, “creativity and perseverance” are essential.

The best way to start an interior design career is to earn a design degree and get your license. This opens up the most career options. An interior design degree can prepare you for a career as a residential or commercial designer, a retail design consultant, a design writer, and other positions within the industry.
